Is the fire almost out?

“To take care of the environment, we must first take care of the environmentalist.”

Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh had been speaking in the auditorium of a wealthy Christian Church in St. Louis. As always he emphasized the need for the U.S. to stop bombing and killing in his country (Vietnam).  There have been many questions and answers when a large man stood up and spoke with searing scorn of the “supposed compassion” of “this Mr Hanh.”

“If you care so much about your people, Mr Hanh, why are you here? If you care so much for the people who are wounded, why don’t you spend your time with them?” At this point my recollection of his words is replaced by the memory of intense anger which overwhelmed me.

When the man finished I looked to Thich Nhat Hanh in bewilderment. What could he – or anyone – say? The spirit of the Vietnam was itself had suddenly filled the room, and it seemed hard to breath.

There was a silence. Then Thich Nhat Hanh began to speak – quietly, with deep calm, indeed with a sense of personal caring for the man who had just damned him. The words seemed like rain on fire. “If you want the tree to grow,” he said, “it won’t help to water the leaves. You have to water the roots. Many of the roots of the war are here in your country. To help the people who are to be bombed, to try to protect them from this suffering, I have to come here”

I may not be watering my roots if I don’t even know where they are…

How am I going to do this if I’m not happy about it? How am I going to take care of the environment if I’m not  taking care of myself?

tranquilidad, quietud.

Todo lo que es, lo que debe ser,

es que te amo y me esperas.

We live in a polluted world, a corrupted world, a destroyed world. And the truth is that humans don’t give a dam about it. As long as we are comfortable, gaining more money, social status and power, we don’t care about tomorrow, we don’t care if we’ll get sick, if our food comes from tortured animals.

Is it because of human nature? Is it because of our education?

Why is a gay couple much more frightening than thousands of extinct species? We are horrified by someone with different believes, but we are indifferent to social injustice. Living a comfortable life is more important than the people who was exploited to get it.

Based on this we can conclude that humans are shortsighted, cannot foresee, not even for our own wellbeing. We are indifferent to the suffering of others (humans and animals) as long as we are fine.

Is it wrong of me (and some others) to refuse to accept this, to fight for a change? Is it foolish, naive?

Every day we have more evidence that there is only ONE health in the world, one which includes humans, animals and the environment. We are all connected, we are all the same, one cannot live without the others. But humans are too proud/pompous/stupid/ignorant/selfish/blind/apathetic to understand.

In the end, me (and some others) are not willing to give up, we will keep working for the things we believe, fighting even for those who are against us, aware or unaware of their actions. And in my area, (conservation medicine) dedicating our lives to help and protect animals.

What about you?

No estoy sola.

Ya no estoy sola… scary…. but good nonetheless…

Así que ahora si lo puedo decir conscientemente:  I’m waiting for you.

Te amo =*

The wind up bird chronicle

October 26, 2009

“It’s not a question of better or worse. The point is, not to resist the flow. You go up when you are supposed to go up and down when you are supposed to go down. When you are supposed to go up, find the highest tower and climb to the top. When you are supposed to go down, find the deepest well and go down to the bottom. When there’s no flow, stay still. If you resist the flow, everything dries up. If everything dries up, the world is darkness.”

“You must be worried – she said – there is nothing I can say at this point, but things should become clear before too long. Now all you can do is wait. It must be hard for you, but there is a right time for everything. Like the ebb and the flow of the tides. No one can do anything to change them. When it`s time to wait, you must wait.”

“We practiced thinking and feeling about things together. Things that happened to either of us individually we now strove to deal with together as something that belonged to both of us. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. But we enjoyed the fresh, new process of trial and error. And even violent collisions we could forget about in each other’s arms”

“Take all the time you need – I said – until you are ready. Time is the one thing we have plenty of. I’ll be right here with you. There is no rush. I just want you to keep one thing in mind: anything of yours, anything at all, as long as it belongs to you, I will accept as my own. That is one thing you will never have to worry about.”

“My uncle smiled – You know what I think? I think what you ought to do is start by thinking about the simplest things and go from there. For example, you could start from a street corner somewhere day after day and look at the people who come by. You are not in a hurry to decide anything. It may be though, but sometimes you’ve got to stop and take time. You ought to train yourself to look at things with your own eyes until something becomes clear. And don’t be afraid of putting some time into it. Spending plenty of time on something can be the most sophisticated form of revenge.

–          Revenge? What do you mean, revenge? Revenge against whom?

–          You’ll understand soon enough – said my uncle with a smile”
